New pool owners are sometimes surprised to learn that "pool maintenance" isn't one repeating routine — it shifts noticeably across the year. What a pool needs the week it opens for the season is different from what it needs during peak summer bather load, which is different again from closing it down and getting it through winter. Understanding what changes at each phase makes the whole season easier to plan for.
Opening: getting from dormant to swimmable
A pool coming out of winter (or simply reopening after being closed for a stretch) usually needs a full water test and a fresh look at every major reading: free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, and, for salt pools, salt level, plus calcium hardness and cyanuric acid (stabilizer) if you test for those. Water sitting stagnant tends to drift — low or zero chlorine, and pH and alkalinity that have wandered from where you left them. A heated pool adds its own seasonal rhythm on top of the water-chemistry calendar. Early in the season, heating a pool up from a cold start is the single biggest heating expense of the year, since it's moving the water through the widest temperature range it'll see at any point — budgeting for that upfront cost, rather than being surprised by the first month's energy bill, makes the rest of the season's smaller top-up costs easier to plan around. Through peak season, a cover used overnight (even just a basic solar cover, not a full safety cover) meaningfully cuts how much top-up heating is needed the next morning, since evaporation is the dominant source of overnight heat loss on an uncovered pool. At closing, if the heater has a winterizing procedure (draining water from its lines to prevent freeze damage), it needs the same attention as the pump and filter — heater damage from a skipped winterization step is one of the more expensive surprises a pool owner can find waiting for them at opening.
A seasonal chemical-safety checklist worth repeating every year
Whatever phase of the season you're in, a few chemical-handling habits are worth treating as fixed routine rather than something you think about only when handling a new product for the first time. Store chlorine products and acid separated from each other, in a dry, ventilated space, since even accidental proximity (a leaking container, a shelf collapse) can bring incompatible chemicals into contact with each other. Add chemicals to water, never to each other and never into the same bucket or scoop — combining different chlorine types, or combining chlorine with an acid, can release dangerous gas. Dose one chemical at a time, let it circulate, and re-test before adding anything else, rather than trying to fix every reading in one sitting. Over a season or two, that log also makes it much easier to catch a slow drift before it becomes an urgent problem, since a total alkalinity reading that's crept from 100 down to 70 over two months is obvious on a logged trend line and easy to miss testing week to week in isolation.
