How to Calculate Your Pool's Volume (and Why It Matters)
Ask most pool owners how many gallons their pool holds and you'll get a shrug, a guess, or a number copied off the original quote from the builder years ago. That's a problem, because pool volume isn't a piece of trivia — it's the one figure that every chemical dose in this entire hobby depends on. Get it wrong by 20%, and every chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and salt dose you calculate afterward is off by roughly the same 20%.
Why a concentration needs a volume
Chemical readings for pool water — free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, salt — are all concentrations: a certain amount of substance dissolved in a certain amount of water, usually expressed as parts per million. A reading on its own tells you nothing about how much chemical to add. "Raise the chlorine by 4 ppm" means something completely different in a 10,000-gallon pool than in a 30,000-gallon one, because the second pool needs three times as much chlorine to move the same 4 ppm. Volume is the multiplier that turns a concentration target into an actual amount of product to pour.
Measuring a rectangular or square pool
This is the simplest shape to measure: length × width × average depth, then multiply by 7.5 (the number of gallons in a cubic foot of water, rounded for convenience). If your pool has a shallow end and a deep end, average the two depths first — a pool that's 3 feet at the shallow end and 8 feet at the deep end has an average depth of 5.5 feet, not 3 or 8. For a pool that's 32 feet long and 16 feet wide with that 5.5-foot average depth, the math works out to 32 × 16 × 5.5 × 7.5 ≈ 21,120 gallons.
Measuring a round pool
Round pools use their diameter (not radius) squared, times the average depth, times 5.9 — a constant that accounts for a circle covering less area than a square with the same outer measurement. A 24-foot round pool with a 4.5-foot average depth comes out to 24 × 24 × 4.5 × 5.9 ≈ 15,293 gallons. Notice how much smaller that is than a square pool with the same 24-foot outer dimension — the corners you're not paying for in a round pool add up.
Measuring an oval pool
Oval pools sit between the two: length × width × average depth × 6.7. That multiplier is higher than a true ellipse's math would suggest, because most "oval" above-ground pools are closer to a rectangle with rounded ends (sometimes called a stadium shape) than to a pure ellipse, so they hold more water than the ellipse formula alone would predict.
What these formulas don't capture
All three formulas assume a fairly consistent cross-section from one end of the pool to the other. A pool with a rounded hopper bottom, a shallow tanning ledge, built-in steps, or an attached spa will hold noticeably less water than the straightforward formula suggests, because those features carve volume out of the simple box or cylinder shape. If your pool has any of these features, treat the calculated number as an upper estimate and, if precision really matters, use the reading from a flow meter during the pool's first fill — that's the one number that reflects the actual water in the actual shape, features and all.
A practical way to sanity-check your number
If you've never measured your pool and don't have a builder's spec sheet, there's a rough cross-check worth running: look up your pool's advertised size (a common "16x32" description, for instance) and compare the resulting formula-based volume against what similar pools in your region are typically quoted at. Big discrepancies usually mean a measurement error — a length and width swapped, or a depth measured at the wrong spot — rather than an unusual pool.
Write the number down
Once you've measured and calculated your volume, the most useful thing you can do is write it somewhere permanent — a sticker inside the equipment pad door, a note in your phone, a line in a pool log.
