How to Balance Your Pool's pH and Total Alkalinity
Of all the numbers on a pool test strip, pH and total alkalinity cause the most confusion, largely because they interact with each other. Chase one without understanding the other and you can end up adding chemical after chemical while the readings barely settle down. Once you understand the relationship, balancing both becomes a much calmer, more predictable process.
What pH actually measures
pH measures how acidic or basic the water is, on a scale where 7 is neutral. Pool water is typically kept slightly basic, in the roughly 7.2-7.8 range, with 7.4-7.6 often cited as ideal because it's close to the pH of human eyes and skin (which is why balanced water feels comfortable to swim in) and because chlorine works most efficiently in that range without becoming overly harsh on surfaces and equipment.
What total alkalinity actually measures
Total alkalinity (TA) measures the water's capacity to resist pH change — it's often described as a "buffer." A pool with low total alkalinity has very little buffering, so its pH swings wildly with every bather, rain shower, or chemical addition. A pool with very high total alkalinity resists pH changes almost too well, making pH stubborn and hard to lower, and it tends to drift the pH upward on its own over time. Most guidance keeps total alkalinity in the range of roughly 80-120 ppm.
Why alkalinity should be fixed first
Because total alkalinity governs how stable pH is, pool-chemistry guidance generally recommends getting total alkalinity into its target range before fine-tuning pH. If you adjust pH while alkalinity is still far out of range, the pH reading you get right today can drift again within a day or two, because the buffering that would normally hold it in place isn't there yet. Fix the buffer first, then the pH adjustment tends to hold.
The chemicals involved
Three common chemicals cover most routine pH and alkalinity work: soda ash (sodium carbonate) raises pH, muriatic acid (a diluted hydrochloric acid solution, commonly sold around 31.45% strength) lowers pH, and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) raises total alkalinity. Each of these has a knock-on effect on the other reading: baking soda nudges pH upward slightly as a side effect of raising alkalinity, while muriatic acid pulls total alkalinity down somewhat as it lowers pH. Neither effect is usually dramatic, but it's worth expecting rather than being surprised by.
A practical sequence
A sensible order for a pool that's out of range on both readings looks like this: test both pH and total alkalinity first. If alkalinity is low, add baking soda to bring it into range, wait for it to circulate (typically several hours to overnight), and re-test. Then look at pH: if it's still off after alkalinity is sorted, dose the appropriate chemical — soda ash to raise it, muriatic acid to lower it — in a smaller, partial amount rather than the full calculated dose, circulate, and re-test again before adding more.
Why gradual dosing beats one big correction
It's tempting to calculate the "exact" dose needed and add it all in one go, but real pool water rarely behaves with textbook precision. Water temperature, how thoroughly a chemical mixes in, and the imprecision of any home test kit all mean a calculated dose is a solid estimate, not a guarantee. Adding roughly half to three-quarters of the calculated amount, waiting for it to circulate, and re-testing avoids the common problem of overshooting a target and needing an opposite-direction correction next.
A word on acid safety
Muriatic acid is the chemical most likely to cause an injury if handled carelessly. Always add it to water, never the reverse, pour it in slowly around the perimeter of the pool with the pump running (never directly onto a pool surface, ladder, or light fixture), and follow the eye and skin protection guidance on the product label.
