Free Chlorine vs. Combined Chlorine: What Your Test Kit Is Really Telling You
Most pool test kits and strips report at least two chlorine numbers, and it's easy to glance at them without really knowing what each one means. Understanding the difference between free chlorine, combined chlorine, and total chlorine is the single most useful piece of pool chemistry knowledge you can pick up, because it explains a lot of confusing symptoms — especially that strong "chlorine smell" that most people misread completely.
Free chlorine: the number that matters most
Free chlorine (often abbreviated FC) is the chlorine that's still available to do its job — killing bacteria, algae, and other organic contaminants. This is the active, working sanitizer, and it's the number every dosing calculation is built around. Most residential pool guidance targets somewhere around 1-3 ppm of free chlorine for everyday swimming conditions, though the ideal number shifts with factors like cyanuric acid (stabilizer) level and how much direct sun the pool gets.
Combined chlorine: the used-up leftovers
When free chlorine reacts with something in the water — sweat, urine, sunscreen, body oils, or other organic material — it forms compounds called chloramines. That's combined chlorine (CC): chlorine that has already done a job and is now chemically "used up," attached to whatever it reacted with. Combined chlorine is a weaker sanitizer and, in high enough concentrations, an irritant. A well-maintained pool should have combined chlorine at or close to zero; a widely cited guideline is that combined chlorine above roughly 0.2-0.5 ppm signals it's time to intervene.
Total chlorine: the sum of both
Total chlorine is simply free chlorine plus combined chlorine added together. Some test kits measure total chlorine and free chlorine directly, then calculate combined chlorine as the difference; others measure all three. Either way, the formula is the same: Total = Free + Combined.
The smell everyone gets wrong
Here's the detail that trips people up constantly: a strong, sharp "chlorine smell" at a pool almost always means there's too much combined chlorine, not too much free chlorine. Properly chlorinated water with low combined chlorine has very little smell at all. That harsh, eye-stinging odor is the chloramines off-gassing, which is a signal that the pool needs more sanitizing power, not less. This is the opposite of what most people's intuition tells them, and it's worth remembering the next time someone suggests "there's too much chlorine in here" based on smell alone.
How shock treatment fixes combined chlorine
The standard fix for elevated combined chlorine is a shock treatment: adding enough chlorine all at once to push the free chlorine level far above the combined chlorine level (a widely used target is roughly 10 times the combined chlorine reading, sometimes called "breakpoint chlorination"). This oxidizes the chloramines and organic waste, breaking them down rather than just diluting them. After a shock, free chlorine is typically very high for a short period and needs to fall back into the normal swimming range before the pool is used again — check your product's guidance and re-test before letting anyone back in.
What pushes combined chlorine up in the first place
Combined chlorine climbs fastest with heavy bather load (a pool party, a hot week when everyone's swimming), inadequate routine chlorine levels that let organic waste accumulate before it's oxidized, and infrequent shocking. Outdoor pools in direct sun also lose free chlorine faster to UV breakdown (which is what cyanuric acid/stabilizer is meant to slow down), leaving less free chlorine on hand to keep combined chlorine in check.
Reading your test kit correctly
When you test your water, look at both numbers if your kit provides them. A free chlorine reading in range with a combined chlorine reading near zero is the sign of a well-balanced pool. A free chlorine reading that looks "fine" but a rising combined chlorine number is an early warning to shock before it becomes a smell-and-irritation problem that everyone notices.
